According to Jeffrey Blankfort, who took this photo, this is "a street in the Palestinian refugee camp of Tal al-Zattar in Beirut with its ramshackle housing and greater Beirut and the sea in view in the distance. Two small boys, one hugging the other, stand in the dirt street. Neither the street nor the camp can be found today and nor, in all likelihood the small boys who if alive would today be grown men. I took the photo in the camp where I stayed for nine days 37 years ago and which, unlike the other camps, had the bad luck to be located in the Qarantina on the Christian side of the city. Six years later, on August 12, 1976, during the civil war, the Falangists, backed by Syria؟s Hafez al-Assad, stormed the camp and slaughtered between 1500 and 3000 Palestinians, a massacre which outside of Lebanon is scarcely remembered to this day. So I thought I would share this photo with you." |
