Return to Hunin

Posted by Sami Kleit on February 7, 2007

Hunin was founded in the Crusaders epoch by the French Unproie family.
During the period of imperialism, when France and Britain where controlling Lebanon and Palestine. Hunin, along with 7 other villages were ceded by decision of French, English and Zionist powers to Palestine. During it's time in Palestine, Hunin came to be known as the religious centre for the Shi'ites in Palestine, who weren't that great in number. In fact, out of all villages and cities in Palestine - only 8 were Shi'a. They had been known as Mitwelis (or Mitwalis), which was the designation for Lebanese Shi'ites - and are still known by that term today, although their designation as Lebanese tends to come first.
Hunin, although no longer in it's original homeland prospered in the British Mandate of Palestine with it's unique mosque dating back to the late Middle Ages.
The population of Hunin was approximately 1800. Although in 1948, about 1400 of them fled to Lebanon fearing attacks on them - leaving only 400 citizens left in the village.
The mayor, Sheker Feres Chahrour and other leading citizens (Mohammad Waqed, Mohammad She3er and Mohammad Berjawi) agreed with Jewish counterparts to receiving a status as Israeli citizens and the return of Hunin's refugees during a meeting in August 1948.
However, because of a fight which erupted between Israeli forces and Arab fighters - the agreement could not be put it in place, the Huninites fled, leaving the fate of the village unknown.

One thing is for sure ... 29 years can pass, 59 years can pass, a 100 years can pass, but Hunin will always be in the heart of it's owners - and the return to Hunin is inevitable.
