History of Al-Sammu'i as told by my grandparents . eMail to a friend
Return to al-Sammu'i

Posted by Ghazi El-Ashker on June 16, 2005

My name is Ghazi Mohammad Hussain Mustafa Hasa'n Ali Saleh Al-Ashker . The son of Mohammad and Jamelieh Al-Ashker . My grandfather's nick name ( Hussain Louzi , because his mother from Nehif and her name was Louzi ).
The town was made of two brothers , Al-Ashker's . However , one went to Macca and his name became El-Hajj . According to the family tree , they came from a family in Nables , called " Bait Abdel Hadii ." It is not unusual to find people with blond hair and blue eyes , even some families where all the family are blond with blus eyes , example " Al Dawi's Family " nick name because he was so light in skin color etc.
The students attended school in a near by village in a small house . There was a spring where the town people gathered their water and washed . Later on my Grandmother Louzi , built a shelter around the water so the women can bath .
When Safad fell , the town people decided to leave . It is worth noting here that the Jewish government asked them to stay , but they feared their death and decided to leave . Specially after my grandfather and his family watched their house being destroyed , the soldiers claimed it was used by the " Al-thowrah fighters ."
The town people of about 300 left towards southern Lebanon . Some on foot , some on horse back or donkeys . My mother was on a horse back and she was ready to give birth at any time . They arrived in Rmaish and stayed for few days , and then to Anjer , and later to Naher El-Bared , 15 kilometer from Tripoli , in northern lebanon . Some went to Syria , Al-Yarmouk camp , some in Jordan ( Beit Al-Kadourah ) .
Their income came from farming , Tabacco , Olive oil and olives , fruits and vegetables , life stock ( Sheep , Goats , Cows etc.) in which they sold or traded it in Safad . Other income , came fom those who where members of the British Army .
These are the family names of Al-Samou'i peopel as I remember them ( As I am 56 and I have been living in Cnada since 1968 ) : Al-Ashker , Al-Hajj , Abdallah , Thaher , Saleam , Kaddora, Khalil , Othman .
However , today our people live all over the world . In Canada , USA , Australia , Germany , Sweden , Denmark , and many other Arab , and non Arab countries .
Al-Samoui peopel are very proud people who have a great respect for education and planning their future . Today we see them as teachers , Principal of Schools , engineers , Doctors , Marine Navigation Officer , chemists , technical and trades . Business people , Telecomunications ,high ranks in the military , some are very wealthy , even millionaires , etc.
My grandparents told me , after World World 1 , there was a shortage of food and some died from it , ( The Depression ) our people had that year had more than what they need and gave some to their neighbors ; they are blessed .
But each and every one remain sad for the loss of our home land , and we all pray that one day , " Justice will prevail , and our rights will be restored on earth , as well as in heaven ."
Our people are spiritual , they believe in , " Harm none , do as you please . And what ever you do in life will come back to you , sooner or later .
May The Creator of all that is , was , or ever will be ; bless our Palestinian peope , give them strength , patience , justice , wealth , and comfort them in their struggle to maintain their sanity in a world that has lost the meaning of the word " Justice and Equality " ; but most of all , a world that has lost their connection with the Creator .
