Return to al-Qubayba

Posted by DavidKuba on March 25, 2004

My ancestors were Sephardic Jews that were at one time in the spice trade.
Their surname was 'Kubaba'. My great-grandfather,Yehudah Arieh (Louis) ben Israel Shulum Kubaba,(1859-1930) was born in Palestine August 1859, possibly in Qubeiba (Kubaba) which was situated near or on the ancient trade route.
(I had seen a map that spelled the settlement 'El Kubab')
Shortly after his birth his parents and older sister went to Makow
Poland to establish a tobacco and spice shop.
Kubaba is the word for pepper (or cubeb) in the Polish language which has its roots in the Middle East. Kubaba was the spice from the Java pepper plant found in Indonesia and traded in the Middle East. It was used by Arabian physicians in the middle ages, rolled into cigarettes, to cure the common cold.
It has always been my wish to find others that were descended from
the same Kubaba family that had it's roots in Palestine and Poland.
My great-grandfather Louis came to the US in 1880 and in 1927 he and his wife Bessie returned to Palestine to live in Tel Aviv on Geula Street. Both are interred in the Mount of Olives Cemetery in Jerusalem.
I am very interested in the oral history of the village of Qubeiba/Qubaybah/Kubaba and its' inhabitants
and would welcome e-mails from others who share my interest.
