Town's name through history
The Crusaders referred to Suhmata in a similar way they referred to the nearby castle Samueth.
Schools
Two schools: the 1st was an elementary school for boys which was founded by the Ottomans in 1886, and the 2nd was an Agricultural School, founded during the British Mandate period.
Religious institutions
One mosque and one church.
Water supplies
Suhmata had two rain-fed pools, which provided water for irrigation.
Archeological sites
The village contained a Crusader castle, known as 'Samueth', which was later rebuilt by al-Thahir al-Umar. He was the first independent Palestinian ruler, who controlled northern Palestine during the late 18th Century. It also shows the remains of a Byzantine church.

According to the Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi, the village remaining structures on the village land are:
"The site is covered with debris and broken walls from fallen stone houses, all of which are scattered among the olive trees that grow there. A castle and a wall that were probably built by the Crusaders still stand."
