My Father's family is from Al-Mujaydil. The Khoury (meaning priest)family for generations were the clergy leaders at the Greek Orthodox Church which is still standing in the town. The church bell was taken to a nearby Jewish Kibbutz and used as a dinner bell. There is a current effort by members of Al-Mujaydil who live in the nearby town of Nazereth to rebuild the church.

This is the village of my mother and her family. My grandmother, mother and uncle were able to run for their lives, under fire, to near by Nazareth, but her other brothers and sisters were forced to become refugees in Jordan and Syria. My mother and uncle are in possesion of the deed to their parent's house (where both were born!) and the land as of today and will never give up their rights to return to their beloved Al-Mujaydel.

My family was living in Al-Mujaydil at the time of the occupation and fled to Nazareth. I was born in Nazareth 10 years later in 1958. I believe that 'Nour' is a (laqab) or a sort of nick name that was given to my grandfather when he was refered to as Abu Al-nour (father of light) and the name 'nour' stuck. Previously we held the name (>awissat)
on my father's side and Saliba on mother's side. The >awissat clan is from the Ma'daba/Salt area of Jordan according to family tradition. That name is still found there today. Other clan (hamoulah) names that binds my relatives are kasaabri and Sahouri. The people of Al-mujaidil who were able to produce a title or deed for the land they lost in Al-mujaidil were given money or traded it for a piece of land on a mountain in Nazareth that is today known as Jabal Al-Mujaidil.
In 1960, when I was 2 years of age, my family moved to Haifa to find work. I still remember in the mid to late sixties how whenever we passed by Al-Mujaidil to go visit Grandmother Mas3adeh in Nazareth, my parents would point to there house,bullet-ridden and abandoned about 20 meters from the Haifa-Nazareth road, almost accross the street from the monastary which still stands today.Today there is no evidence of an Arab town except for the monastary and the church which was refurbished in the 80's, yet still abandoned and vandalized by the local Jewish youth. The church site is completely surrounded by Jewish homes and difficult to spot from the main road.
