29. During 1940, in the course of the successful measures against Arab holders of illegal arms, the then General Officer Commanding, General Giffard, interviewed representatives of Jewish organizations and parties and invited the Jewish community to hand in their illegal arms, upon which legalized arrangements would be made for the protection of the community. This invitation was rejected, as was the alternative suggestion that the numbers of arms held by the Jewish community should be stated.

Notable seizures from Jews included :--
(i) A search of Ben Shemen settlement (Lydda District) by police in January, 1940, revealed 27 rifles, 5 sub-machine guns, 8,515 rounds of ammunition, 23 grenades, 38 machine gun magazines, large quantities of explosives, a morse radio transmitter and numerous documents on The subject of firearms and military evolutions, These arms were concealed in well-constructed air tight containers buried under" tiled floor. Eleven persons were arrested, brought to trial and sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment.
