CHAPTER XV.

(ii) In January, 1943, a joint police and military patrol stopped a Jewish supernumerary police pick-up being driven in the direction of Dafne settlement (Galilee District) and discovered 9 ,879 rounds of .303 ammunition for which the three occupants could not account. The three men were later sentenced by military court to long terms of imprisonment. It is noteworthy that in September, 1942, a small police party checking crop estimates in Dafoe settlement discovered by accident 12 rifles of foreign manufacture. The inhabitants became hostile and prevented the police from seizing the arms. A collective fine of £P.400 was imposed on the settlement when the committee refused to hand the arms over to the authorities. An interesting feature is that, at that time, the settlement contained 200 inhabitants, with a Jewish supernumerary police force of 2 N.C.Os. and 20 constables armed with 35 Government rifles and two Greener guns.

(iii) The accidental discharge of a machine gun in a flat in Tel Aviv in June, 1943 led to the discovery of an arms cache. A German heavy machine gun, 11 pistols, 607 cartridges, 13 grenades, 2 lbs of gelignite, numerous explosive articles and items of equipment including notes on the use of firearms and bombs were found concealed in the room in which the discharge took place. One of the documents examined proved to be an inventory of another arms cache called "District Store No. 2!J-15.10.42", which apparently contained 116 pistols, 4 rifles, 29 spare barrels, 63 bombs, 59 kilogrammes of gun cotton, 970 detonators, 200 metres of fuse, and 44,198 rounds of ammunition. Unfortunately no indication as to the whereabouts of this store was found. One arrest was made. The occupant of the room was traced several months later and was sentenced by a military court to fifteen years' imprisonment.

(iv) A cache of the Irqun. found in Jerusalem in June, 1944, contained 2 'booby' traps, 12 bombs containing from 2 to 12 lbs. of explosive, 850 lbs. of gelignite and ammonal , 25 rounds of pistol ammunition and numerous other items used in the manufacture of bombs. No arrest was made.

(v) In April, 1944, a police mobile patrol discovered a Stern Group hiding place iu a bungalow on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. A search revealed 9 homemade bombs, 4 grenades, 7 pistols, 829 cartridges, a large quantity of explosive articles, equipment, imitation police uniforms and documents. Four persons, including a woman, were seen running away from the building and were pursued. The three men succeeded in
