CHAPTER XVI.

(b) Particulars of Government health services.

18. The Government Department of Health was organised in 1920-21 on lines which correspond generally to the organisation as it stands at the present time. This present. organisation is made up as follows :-

1 a) A directorate in Jerusalem divided into the following sections:-

(i) General section, including administration, finance, personnel , medical stores, town planning, village water supplies and new projects.

(ii) Medical section, including hospitals, dispensaries, school medical service, prisons, consultants, and pharmacy subsections.

(iii) Sanitary and epidemic section, including urban and rural sanitary engineers, the regulation of trades and industries and food control sub-sections.

(iv) Endemic disease section, including ophthalmic tuberculosis, venereal disease, hookworm and village latrine services.

(v) Laboratory section, including Government Chemist and agricultural laboratory sub-sections, and vaccine and antirabic institutes.

(b) A district health administration consisting of five medical divisions of Palestine each under a Senior Medical Officer.

The Senior Medical Officers control :-

(i) Eighteen sub-districts, each under a Palestinian medical officer responsible for all medical, health, sanitary, epidemic, malaria, endemic and medico-legal duties in the principal towns of the sub-district and in villages and settlements.

(ii) Ten Government general and infectious diseases hospitals under Palestinian medical officers, three mental hospitals, one maternity hospital annex, five training centres for nurses and a school for midwives.

(iii) Twenty-one Government clinics.

(iv) Forty-one stationary village ophthalmia clinics, a travelling clinic and a school ophthalmic service.

(v) Thirty-eight infant welfare and maternity centres.

(vi) Four gynaecological and ante-natal centres, and subsidiary clinics.

(vii) A school medical service.
