or vocational side rather than on the academic, in which term is included preparation for general teaching and for other liberal professions.
(b) ARAB PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
67. There is a number of Christian Mission, and a few Arab National, secondary schools which provide education up to matriculation standard for the children of parents who can afford relatively high fees. In the mission schools the standard of Arabic 'is sometimes poor and many prefer to take English School Certificate examinations. These schools serve a useful purpose in educating the children of the upper and middle classes. They vary greatly in efficiency; their total number of pupils in the fourth secondary (matriculation) class is about treble that of the Government schools, but their percentage of successes is less and they have no post-matriculation classes except for teacher-training in two girl's schools.
Training of teachers for government schools. (a) GOVERNMENT ARAB COLLEGE.
68. The training section is an integral part, and at present the highest section, of the Government Arab College. All pupils are boarders. The course consists of the two post-matriculation years. In them Arabic and English literature together with other scientific or literary subjects are continued up to Intermediate standard together with a course in the theory and practice of teaching. Some attention is paid to psychology, but a greater part of the lesson time is given to practical training in methods of teaching and in class management. The graduates of this class are destined to teach elementary and lower secondary classes.
(b) WOMEN'S TRAINING COLLEGE.
69. The Women's Training College, opened in 1919, has about 70 boarding and 30 day students in attendance. The majority are Moslems. Here too the type of student has improved with the general improvement of the girls' schools. An English Principal, is in charge, assisted by a staff which includes English specialists for English, domestic science, kindergarten subjects and needlework. The other members of the staff are well qualified Palestinian women. The college is a complete secondary school. It offers the Palestine Matriculation and has a fifth post-matriculation class for training. All subjects, except English, domestic science, handwork and the like, are taught through the medium of Arabic.
