CHAPTER XVI.
(c) RURAL TEACHERS' TRAINING CENTRES.

(i) Men

70. A teachers' hostel was maintained at Tulkarm for 5 years for the purpose of training Government village teachers for a. one year's course in agriculture, the expenses of the hostel being met by an annual grant from the American Near East Foundation. During that period 75 teachers from village schools were given each a year's course in agriculture at the Kadoorie Agricultural School. The experiment proved most successful. The Near East Foundation withdrew its grant on financial grounds in 1935 and the centre was accommodated, with a change of character, in the Kadoorie School where since 1933 pupils of the School after taking the diploma in agriculture are admitted to pedagogic training for one year. The course includes practical teaching in neighbouring villages and the management of a school garden. Between 1936 and 1914 this scheme was much disturbed by civil strife and war hut is now working well. See paragraph 63.

(ii) Women.

71. This centre was opened at Ramallah in 1935, for Moslem village girls. The course was originally elementary but now the standard of admission has been raised and the length of the course increased from two to three years. The centre prepares candidates for work in village schools. They live in a rural environment: cooking, laundry and housework are all carried out by the girls' and stress is laid upon hygiene, domestic science, and infant welfare.

(d) TECHNICAL INSTRUCTORS.

72. A number of instructors in carpentry and metal work have been produced by the Government Trade School at Haifa Bay which was opened in 1937 and has carried on its work with great difficulty owing to military occupation of the building. The school recruits its pupils from the top elementary class and provides a three year course in carpentry and metal work.

(e) OTHER SOURCES OF TRAINING.

73. With a view to the provision of specialist teachers of high standard, Government maintains scholars at the American University of Beirut, in technical schools in Egypt, and in Universities or other educational institutions in the United Kingdom.

Technical education in Arab schools.

74. A Supervisor of Technical Education was appointed in 1930, who, in addition to his departmental work, acts as advisor to Government in matters relating to arts and crafts. The first
