16. It is of interest to recast table 1 by extracting from the wage rates for Jews the element of compensatory allowance which has been included. The resulting figures (table 2) thus represent basic wages before any allowances of any type are added. Although they serve as a. measure for comparison with rates prevailing in other countries, it must be borne in mind that the effective wage rates are those shown in table 1. Only a limited number of Arab employers paid compensatory allowances; the market rates of wages included some degree of compensation for the higher cost of living.
