THE Regularization OF WAGES IN WAR-TIME.
22. With the shortage of supplies, rising living costs, industrial expansion and the keen demand for labour, wages showed an upward trend during the war-years, as has been indicated above. Cost-of-living allowances were granted and the basic wage rates, i.e. that part of the wage on which cost-of-living allowances are calculated, increased appreciably. Earnings also increased on account of bonuses, seniority increments, overtime rates and similar additions.
