CHAPTER XVII.

As has already been stated (paragraph 31) the Ordinance is, however, under review by a committee appointed by the High Commissioner. The committee's terms of reference are:-

"To consider and report upon the provisions of the Workmen's Compensation Ordinance -

(a) in relation to war conditions; and

(h) in respect of long-term policy in the whole field of workmen's compensation".

The committee's recommendations nnder their first term of reference resulted in the enactment of the Workmen's Compensation (Temporary Increases) Ordinance, 1945*, which was designed as a temporary measure to bring the compensation payable under the principal Ordinance into closer relation with the rise in the cost of living. The rates of compensation in force are very close to the requirements of this Convention and its corresponding recommendations.

Under their second term of reference, the committee are dealing among other points with the extension of the scope of the Ordinance and the provision of medical care, the two matters in the present law which fall short of the requirements of this Convention.

(xiii) Workmen's Compensation (Occupational Diseases) Convention 1925-(Revised) 1934.

The inclusion of occupational diseases in proposed legislation is a subject being dealt with by the committee referred to under the preceding paragraph, under its second term of reference. However, the notification of occupational diseases has now been made compulsory by law under the Accidents and Occupational Diseases (Notification) Ordinance, 1945**.

(xiv) Equality of Treatment (Accident Compensation) Convention 1925.

Palestine has adhered to this Convention. In the Workmen's Compensation Ordinance there is no specific discrimination between Palestinian and foreign workers who enjoy this right to compensation even if they leave Palestine after the occurrence of the injury.

(xv) Night Work (Bakeries) Convention 1925.

This Convention concerning the prohibition of night work in bakeries is not applied in Palestine. Great Britain is not among the twelve countries which have ratified it. A committee has been appointed by the Director of Labour with the following terms of reference :-
