The war closed the usual sources of imported supplies. Local catches, together with the production of fish-ponds, were insufficient to meet demand, although yields from both local sources were substantially increased as compared with pre-war figures. The increase was particularly marked in the case of the culture of carp in ponds, a Jewish industry developed during the war. Figures for 1942 to 1945 were as follows

It will be seen from table 7 that, whereas the average availability of fish of all kinds was 6.6 kgms. a bead of the urban and semiurban population per annum in the period 1930-31, it had risen to 11.l kgms. a head in.1937-38. Generally at a lower level
