15. Owing to the fortunate circumstance that large stocks were on hand at the outbreak of war, no shortage was experienced during the war years. All imports during the war were effected on Government account against an annual quota of 150 tons, which arrangement continues to operate for 1946. Local stocks have, however, now moved into consumption and representations have been made to the appropriate authorities for an increase in Palestine's quota for the coming year. Pre-war imports consisted of approximately 300 tons annually.

COFFEE.

16. Imports are effected partly on Government account from Ministry of Food purchases in East Africa and partly by merchants' associations from Aden, Yemen and Ethiopia in the proportion of 1,000 tons and 1,500 tons annually. This is sufficient to meet the country's requirements.

VEGETABLES.

17. In bulk Palestine produced almost its entire requirement of vegetables in pre-war years, except onions, garlic and potatoes.

* Included in the British Supply Mission schedule as commodities in world short supply and procurable only against quotas .

** The milk equivalent of samneh and butter has been omitted from the total as these commodities are composed entirely of milk fat extracted during the preparation of skimmed milk powder and dried leben.
