23. In addition to locally grown supplies, some 21,000 tons of oilcakes, by-products of the oil and soap industry, are available as fodder. During 1945 some 20,000 tons of carobs were imported from Cyprus and 5,375 tons of bran from Egypt; a quantity of carobs were used by industry, particularly in the production of alcohol.

24. Palestine is largely dependent on the importation of oilseeds to maintain the country's requirements for edible oils, margarine and soap. During 1945 approximately 4,500 tons of margarine and 12,000 tons of refined edible oil were produced from imported oil seeds. Soap production is about 11,000 tons; 8,500 tons from imported oil seeds and 2,500 tons from local olive oil. Arrangements have been made for the continuation of centralised purchase and import of oil seeds from overseas countries in 1946.
