It was concluded that about 75% (375,000) of the population of three large urban areas came into the two upper food expenditure groups in l!J43, as against 25% (125,000) in the previous year. The effect of this change upon diet would have been enhanced in 1943 by the institution of school feeding for Arab children, of whom 9.3% received meals during that year. (44% of Oriental Jewish children and 29% of European Jewish children were already receiving school meals in 1942).
