Licences had been granted up to the end of January, 1946, for the importation of the following numbers from the United Kingdom :-•
Heavy commercial 494
Light commercial 2'16
Private cars 1,430
Motor cycles 1,4 71
From the information at present available it appears to be unlikely that it will be possible to obtain more than a part only of Palestine's requirements of 1946 from the United Kingdom and Canada or from surplus War Department stocks. The question of obtaining the balance by import from the United States is now under consideration.
Tyres.
38. At the beginning of 1946 the position as regards tyres was as follows:-

Proposed future allocations:-
(a) For 1st quarter, 1946 6,900 6,127
(b) For 2nd quarter, 1946 5,500 4,000 The quarterly allocations to Palestine are determined by the British Supply Mission, Cairo, subject to approval and amendment by the Export Licensing Authority, Washington and the supply authorities in London. The allocations are based on quarterly estimates of requirements, prepared by the Controller of Road Transport; these estimates are reduced as dictated by shortages in the supply position.
39. The numbers of tyres which owners are at present entitled to draw in respect of vehicles which are on the roads, subject to inspection of the condition of the tyres in use, are as shown below:-
