87. The Anglo-Palestine Bank Ltd. Established in 1903; share capital £P.861,000; deposits £P.36,242,000 by the end of 1944. Having started as a minor subsidiary of the Jewish Colonial Trust Ltd. (which was the first Zionist banking institution, established in 1899, but functions today only as a holding company for various financial institutions of the Zionist Organisation), the Anglo Palestine Bank has developed very rapidly. This is illustrated by the steady increase in the bank's share in the total bank deposits in the country from 45 % in 1938 to 58% in 1944. It has a number of subsidiaries, the most important of which is the General Mortgage Bank of Palestine Ltd. This is a central Jewish credit institution for building in towns and suburbs. Share capital £P.1,000,000. It has granted about 7,000 loans, totalling approximately £P.5,000,000, about one half of which went to Tel Aviv, roughly a quarter to Haifa, and the remainder to Jerusalem and the minor Jewish townships.
