The Florentin and Shapiro quarters were founded by Jews in the knowledge that they were establishing Jewish communities within the boundaries of an Arab town; and, although the Municipality of Tel Aviv laid claim to the two quarters as early as 1933, it was not until after the riots of 1936 that the inhabitants began to show any serious concern at their inclusion in an Arab town. Since that date feeling on both sides has been intensified over the future of the two quarters. By Arabs the Jewish claims are regarded as another twist in the strangulation of Jaffa, which is already closely hemmed in by Tel Aviv and the Jewish settlements of Bat Yam and Rolon, and is connected with the hinterland by a narrowing corridor of Arab owned land pointing eastwards in the direction of Ramie. Any suggestion of an adjustment of boundary between the two towns in favour of Tel Aviv, which might at one time have been effected on the basis of a compensation award, is now regarded by Arabs everywhere as a surrender to Jewish encroachment. The Arabs argue that they are prepared to do as much for their Jewish citizens as for Arab citizens, and that if The Jews wish for more They must leave the Arab town in which they-originally settled of their own free will.
