CHAPTER XXVI.

Arab and other rural areas : Adults 300 grammes per mensem.

Adults and children in the. Arab rural areas originally received a ration of 600 grammes per capita, but it was reduced to 300 grammes in 1943 as it was found that a great part of the sugar supplied to vi1lagers was either smuggled to neighbouring countries or sold on the black market.

In view of the acute world shortage of sugar supplies no relaxation of the present sugar control can be effected.

EGGS AND POULTRY.

42. Before the outbreak of war large quantities of eggs were imported, mainly from Middle East countries. Most of these territories practically ceased supplies during the war years. Eggs were declared a controlled commodity in September, 1939*, controlled prices being enforced in September, 1942**. Eggs were physically controlled from this date until November, 1944. Both control of prices and physical control were withdrawn in November, 1944***, partially owing to difficulties in transport caused by the ~n horse sickness. Eggs were removed from the list of controlled articles in August, 1945 .

43. A consignment of egg powder was imported from the U.S.A. in 1944 to supplement local supplies of shell eggs. Egg powder was declared a controlled commodity in August, 1944tt and maximum prices were fixed at the same time .

44. Poultry, live and dead, was declared a controlled commodity in September, 1939t and was made subject to a maximum prices order in September, 1942 . The maximum price was withdrawn in September, 1944ttt and poultry was struck off the list of controlled commodities in August, 1945 q.

45. The Food Control (Controlled Articles) Order (No. 6), 1942 qq, and various subsidiary Orders, imposed certain restriction on the movement, maximum prices etc. of all types of fish, includ-
