CHAPTER XXVI.

Engineers, Medical Services, Arab Legion, Trans-Jordan Frontier Force, Gendarmerie Syrienne, Palestine Civil Defence and Police Force. In addition to supplies to the above, the N.A.A.F.I. and the Eastern Group Supply Council, orders placed through the U.K.C.C. were executed for military bodies in Russia, Turkey and Abyssinia. The following table shows the number of Army and Government contracts placed since 1943, and their value :-

IMPORT AND EXPORT LICENSING.

115. In August, 1942, the work of recommending the issue of import and export licences in respect of commodities under control was taken over by the Controller. A licensing section at the beginning of 1943 took over from the Department of Customs the work of the actual issuing of such licences. The following figures indicate the number of applications dealt with during the period August, 1942 to 31st December, 1945.

(e) Control of Road Transport.

116. The Department of the Controller of Road Transport was established in 1941 by the appointment of a Controller as a Competent Authority for the purposes of Regulation 46 of the Defence Regulations, 1939, thereby empowering the Controller to make such orders as appeared to him to be necessary in the interest of defence, or the efficient prosecution of the war, or for maintaining supplies and services essential to the life of the community.

117. For the purpose of administration the Department is divided into three main sections, each under the direction of an Assistant Controller.
