(p. 340)
The costs of cultivation of citrus which before the war ranged from £P.5 - £P.10 (with yields from 40-100 export cases) are now in general between £P .12 and £P .18 with an average yield of about 45 cases.
(p. 342)
In the seasons prior to 1946-J7, an average quantity of about three-quarters of a million cases of fruit per season was taken up by the citrus products industry. In 1946-47, however, with increased quotas for barrelled concentrated juice for beverage manufacture and with commencement of commercial production, by 8 factories, of canned sterile concentrated orange juice (of which only about 33 tons were produced in 1945/46) and by 5 factories of canned pasteurised juice, it is estimated that the total intake by the products industry in the 1946-47 season was around l! million cases of fruit. Production in 1946-47, mainly for export to tb United Kingdom, is estimated at :
Barrelled concentrated orange juice
Barrelled concentrated grapefruit juice
Canned sterile concentrated orange juice
Canned pasteurised juice
1,630 tons 450 tons 750 tons 2! million 20
ozs. cans.
It is understood that a potential market exists in the United Kingdom for up to at least 3,000 tons of canned sterile concentrated orange juice per season in view of requirements for child feeding schemes.
