It appears that, in its adoption of the title "Jewish Resistance Movement in Palestine", the Hagana intended not only to cloak a departure from its traditional policy of defence but also to conceal its collaboration with the Irgun and Stern Group in certain large scale operations against Government installations. The Jewish Resistance Movement claims to be concerned with attacking only those instruments of Government which prevent illegal immigration and with causing the minimum loss of life.
Following an attack on the Secretariat at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem on the 22nd July, 19~6. in which part of the building was wrecked by explosives causing the death of one hundred public servants of all communities, it became obvious that the Irgun and Stern Group were bent upon pursuing their own programme of unrestricted violence. Thenceforth there was no positive evidence of collusion between the three associations although both extreme groups, on occasions when it proved convenient for recruiting new members and issuing threats, continued to use the name of the "Jewish Resistance Movement". Simultaneously, the growing realisation among Jewish leaders that extreme violence was harming the Zionist cause began to develop in Jewish Agency and Hagana circles into a campaign bordering on counter violence. But, in the face of Government's attitude to illegal immigration and the urgency with which the evacuation of Jewish displaced persons in Europe was regarded by many members of the Hagana, there was a tendency for some of the so-called "activists" among them to transfer their allegiance to the dissident groups.
The Hagana operates an illicit broadcasting transmitter, "Kol Israel" (Voice of Israel). This station first started broadcasting in March, 1\)40, continued for four months and was then inoperative until 9th October, 1945, when it became the month piece of the "Jewish Resistance Movement". Since that date transmissions in English, Arabic or Hebrew were given almost daily for periods of ten to fifteen minutes but have lately become less frequent.
