parties in Palestine and seeks to unite the moderate elements of other organisations. At the Palestine elections to the 22nd Zionist Congress it polled 12,055 votes, or 6% of the total. It has no representation on the Jewish Agency Executive. Leading figures are Dr. F. Rosenblueth and Dr. G. Landauer. The party associated itself with those Congressional resolutions which called for the repeal of the White Paper of 1939, the exploration of Jewish-Arab understanding and the cessation of terrorism. Its organs are the weekly "Mitteilungsblatt" (in German) and "Amudim" (in Hebrew).

HtSTADRUTH HAZIONIM HAKLAI.Im (Confederation of General Zionists).

(§ 38)

This party is a branch of the World Confederation of General Zionists which has been divided into two separate factions for over ten years. Until the Confederation re-amalgamated in June, 1946, the two factions were known as the General Zionists 'A' and 'B'. The former, a moderate group, maintained the traditional policy of the General Zionists, aiming at the upbuilding of the Jewish national home on Zionist principles unadulterated by sectional interests or party ideologies and at Zionist unity in all social and cultural affairs. On the other hand, the General Zionists 'B', comprising a number of influential middle-class elements supported by a small labour group, associated itself with the extreme right wing parties and advocated private enterprise in the up-building of the national home. In spite of the re-union, the two factions have not entirely composed their differences and it is evident that, through the influence of a powerful body of American General Zionists led by Dr. A. H. Silver, members of the party are becoming increasingly maximalist in {heir outlook as the prestige and support of Dr. Weizman declines. It was this trend which, at the 22nd Zionist Congress, caused a sharp division among the General Zionists on the main political issues and swayed the balance against Dr. Weizman's re-election to the Presidency of the World Zionist Organisation. Associated with the General Zionists are influential bodies such as the Farmers' Association (mainly citrus growers) the Manufacturers' Association and the Civic Union. There are two labour groups affiliated to the party :

Ha'oved Hatzioni, which participates in the General Federation of Jewish Labour; and the Irgun Ovdim (General Zionists 'B') which remains independent. The party is represented in the Executive of the Jewish Agency by eight out of the nineteen Zionist members. Its leading figures in Palestine are Mr. F. Bernstein, the bead of the Commerce and Industry Department, Dr. M. Sneh and Mr. I. Gruenbaum, the head of the Labour Department.
