A general view of the terraced fields of Battir, known over centuries as the ؟Jinan؟, meaning gardens. It؟s beauty has been recognized by tens of historians and travelers. This Jinan has been irrigated by the surplus water of ؟Ain el-Balad؟. Since times immemorial, the agricultural products of the Jinan of Battir have been sold in the Jerusalem markets until this date. The art of stone terracing is an old, ancestral, aesthetic heritage in Palestine characterizing most of Battir؟s mountainous fields and orchards. Our ancestors and forefathers did understood the environmental effect of soil erosion, and consequently they developed their terracing skills to conserve their limited natural resources for a better life.
