This historical novel is told mainly through the eyes of a teenaged boy, Radi, who lives a traditional, semi-agrarian small town life with his father, mother, and baby brother. We see the growing bewilderment of the family and neighbors as the dangers begin, until the whole town is swept away. Parts of the novel are narrated by AbdalRahman, an Iraqi volunteer among the Arab irregulars who have enlisted to defend the land.
