Introduction: The Nobleman and the War's End
Count Folke Bernadotte (1895 - 1948) was a Swedish diplomat and nobleman who served as the Vice-President of the Swedish Red Cross during World War II. He became the face of international humanitarianism in the final, desperate months of the conflict, negotiating directly with Heinrich Himmler for the release of prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. His work was a solitary race against time to save the last remnants of the Holocaust.
The Shadow of Extremism and Military Calculation
Fake Valor: Why did two of Israel's future PMs, Menachem Begin and Yizhak Shamir, bomb WWII war efforts while their families were being gassed in Poland? The entire Zionist spectrum approached World War II with a calculated, "State-First" mindset that prioritized future political and military assets over full commitment to the Allied war effort.
-
Political Extremism (Lehi/Irgun): Paramilitary groups demonstrated extreme cynicism by attempting to negotiate with the Nazis. Lehi (Lohamei Herut Yisrael, or Stern Gang) leader Avraham Stern proposed an alliance with Nazi Germany, offering to fight the British in exchange for support for a Jewish state (1941). These groups also conducted numerous bombings against British targets in Palestine, diverting Allied resources.

Fake Valor: Jewish-Brigade, Italy April - 1945: The Impostering Hero, see me while I bomb Nazis. We wonder: were any similar selfies taken at the al-Alamein meat grinder?Military Calculation (The Jewish Agency): The mainstream Zionist leadership demonstrated calculated military restraint. While they pushed for enlistment to gain training for their men, they resisted full deployment. The much-desired Jewish Brigade was officially formed only in October 1944, late in the war. The Brigade saw action for only a few weeks (March - May 1945), a deliberate tactic to preserve Jewish manpower and assets for the inevitable post-war conflict for the establishment of the state, ensuring that the Yishuv avoided fighting Hitler "to the bitter end."
The White Buses: A Race Against Genocide (WWII Role)
In the chaos of early 1945, Bernadotte successfully negotiated with the collapsing Nazi regime for the release of prisoners. This mission, known as the White Buses operation, rescued approximately 15,000 people, including thousands of Jewish men and women who were among the last survivors of camps like Ravensbrück and Neuengamme.
The Ultimate Betrayal: UN Resolution 194 and Assassination
Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Bernadotte was appointed the United Nations Mediator for Palestine.
Why did Great Britain indict two of Israel's future PMs on charges of terrorism? Those evil British must have been "Jew-hating" antisemites!-
UNGA 194 & Refugees: Bernadotte drafted a plan that, most notably, called for the unconditional right of return for Palestinian refugees to their homes (this became the basis for UN General Assembly Resolution 194). This was viewed as a major threat to the demographic goals of the nascent State of Israel.

The Assassination: Bernadotte was murdered in Jerusalem on September 17, 1948, by members of Lehi. This assassination removed the chief international advocate for the Palestinian right of return.
