Today, in the old part of Lydda, I met Dvora, 46 years old, mother of five - and she told me an unusual story:
Over a long period of time already, once a year, she gets a very special visitor: Mohammad, 90, from Ramallah, together with his children, grand-children and great-grand-children! He once USED to inhabit the house, she lives in now, it used to be HIS HOME - till 1948! He comes down from Ramallah every year to look, walk around on still so very familiar ground and think back, how it used to be! She told me, he and his family are always welcome...after all, she said, he lived here once...!
I wanted to ask her how she felt, occupying a house, which is clearly not HER'S, if there is no guilt or at least some kind of discomfort - but finally didn't. I don't think, she would have understood!
I'd like to find Mohammad, but Dvora doesn't know his last name, she never asked. I am sure, to sit with him and listen to his side of the story, would reveal a very different reality!!
