Haavara FAQs: American Jewish Conference, Nov 1st, 1944: Report On The Interim Committee, Commissions On Rescue, Palestine And Post-War |
This primary source document is the second publication of the American Jewish Conference (AJC) which was released on November 1st, 1944. As you will discover soon, it has been watered down compared with the first version released in the Fall of 1943. That said, the second release contains damning information of how the American Jewry (and Zionist Jews) behaved when the last two millions were still alive in the death camps. Note how they were laser-focused on Palestine as the ONLY haven for Europe's Jews. We would appreciate a PDF version if you have a copy of the first version.
As you read the resolutions, please note: A) How rescuing Europe's Jews was an after thought (see page 5 and page 13) and it was added ONLY after Bergson Group and the Rabbis (who were a minority amongst American Jews) raised public awareness of the situation in death camps by mid-1943. Zionists of all shades fought them with tooth and nail; they even weaponized antisemitism against them and lobbied to deport their leaders to shut them down (Raul Hilberg came to a similar conclusion). B) Whenever rescuing Jews was mentioned; it was always done in the contexts of saving them ONLY in Palestine. Anything else was fought with tooth and nail as you shall discover soon (see p. 17, 19, and 119). Actually as you on page 17, the conference's resolution asked the US Congress to not increase its immigration quotas as of Nov. 1944, and that by itself is very telling! C) Shamelessly, often Jews claim that Palestine was the only viable location for Jewish refugees, (i.e., see page 119) At length, we replied to this myth in another section. D) It is worth emphasizing that during 1944-45, FDR's War Refugee Board (WRB) saved close to 200,000 Jews during the war without sending them to Palestine! It should be noted the WRB would have been impossible not for the hard work of the Rabbis and Bergson Group who faced incredible hostility from the Zionist movement. In this regard, we ask you to imagine this counterfactual scenario: what if Ben-Gurion & Co. managed to shut down those brave Jews in the Bergson Group who made WRB possible in late 1943? In other words, the Holocaust would have been much worse than it was. E) Just in case you think this was unfair anti-Zionist rant, please think twice. We were shocked to discover that Raul Hilberg (in seminal work in the "Destruction Of The European Jews") had a very similar assessment. Actually, his assessment was way more critical than ours.
Therefore, in practice, Zionists leaders (and much of American Jewry) left Europe's Jews with two options: either they do Aliyah to Palestine, or go to Auschwitz, and lobbied like hell against an viable third alternative. Actually, this evil policy (of focusing only on Palestine as a haven for Jews) persisted after the war ended in the DP camps. It is worth noting that American Jews investigated this particulate point in 1983 and they were quickly got nixed.
Finally, for completeness sake, we have dedicate another section to track more documents about this "Patriotic Jewish" Conference. We hope you will find it helpful. Trust us on this one, we you see below is only the tip of the iceberg.
