Haavara FAQs: Why did Hayim Greenberg describe American Jewry as "morally bankrupt" in early 1943?

At the height of the calamity in February 1943, Hayim Greenberg, a prominent Zionist Jewish leader, describe America's Jewry as "morally bankrupt"; but why did he write that? Spoiler alert: Mr. Greenberg's contempt for America's Jewry was dead serious, as he made it clear in the opening lines of his article. Trust us on this one; this will be worth your time reading it multiple times. Mr. Greemberg's indictment of America's Jewry didn't come out of the blue, and as you shall discover soon, he was warranted. Soon after publishing this piece, he wrote another critical article titled "Break the Siege," which we are still trying to locate. This article came to our attention while reading Beit-Zvi's book. In this article, Mr. Greenberg addressed another major taboo subject (hoarding and starving rescue funds) that remains censored to this date. Fake Valor: When American Rabbis marched in DC in Oct. 1943 to lobby for rescuing Jews, you would think Zionists supported them?

It should be noted that Mr. Greenberg wrote this article seven months before the infamous "American Jewish Conference" and Rabbis' March on DC when American Jewry officially dropped prioritizing rescuing Europe's Jews in favor of focusing on building their so-called "Jewish state." We are sure Mr. Greenberg must have been fuming with anger during this "patriotic conference". Anyhow, as you contemplate what Mr. Greenberg wrote, please always keep in your mind that American Jewry's "moral bankruptcy" happened when the last three million were still alive in Europe's ghettos and death camps. Meaning, their policies were not an afterthought; they knew well what was happening in Europe and the ramification of their policies (spoiler alert again: news of the calamity used to arrive almost in real time)! Now, allow this fact to sink in for a minute, then reflect: How did American Jewry behave during the genocide in Gaza? To be honest, they behaved slightly better than they did in the 1940s. The more we research this community's response to the Holocaust, the more we get the feeling that Palestinians have seen nothing yet! If this is how you they treated their own; how would they treat their "perceived enemies"?

Much to our surprise, Mr. Greenberg wrote a scathing attack on territorialists (those Jews who advocated saving Jews anywhere vs. those who wanted to save them only in Palestine) ten months earlier in April 1942, implying the opposite of the article below. It seems that between both articles, he recognized the dangers of Zionists' policy (of being fixated only on Palestine as the only haven for Jewish refugees), and he switched his mind to becoming a territorialist once the scale of the Holocaust became apparent in the Fall of 1942. Just a few months after this article was published, he was lobbying Zionists to send Jewish refugees to Alaska, and Zionist leaders quickly reprimanded him for suggesting it.

If you think Mr. Greenberg's framing of the events was an exaggeration or over the top, please think twice. This point, in particular, was investigated by American Jewry 50 years later, in early 1983, and they were quickly nixed. This is a BIG TABOO subject; it is more like touching the third rail of Jewish politics. If you are Jewish and you grab it; it could end your career at a minimum.

197. As you see in the 2nd half other page, Mr. Greenberg clearly became a territorialist by making the case that Jews should be saved immediately anywhere besides Palestine. Keep in mind that it was him who wrote a scathing attack against territorialists just eight months earlier. He must have felt guilty:

Anyhow, it seems the Bergson Group heeded his advice and switched direction four months later in the second half of 1943 by focusing on rescuing Jews as their top priority:

On the other hand, he must have known that the AJC's leadership (Rabbi Stephan Wise and Nahum Goldmann) lobbied the US State Department against such a thing (see Politics of Rescue, p. 101):

Just in case you're curious, we Palestinians often lynched our brothers and sisters for doing far less of a treason. Just imagine Black Americans electing the House Nxxxrs after their emancipation in the 1860s. That is exactly what American Jews have elected since the 1940s. They allowed their lowest (thugs, fascists, gangsters, socialist nationalists, etc) to lead them! Hannah Arendt's conclusion was correct: Jews would have been much better off being leaderless; Jews would have fared much better. Mazeltov, dear Jews, on this "wonderful gift" to humanity!
