From prestigious university presses in Western capitals to solemn research institutes in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, academic credentials served as the ultimate seal of objectivity.

However, a forensic examination of primary sources, declassified archives, and the internal contradictions of leading scholars reveal a starkly different reality. Israeli historiography was not forged in an isolated "ivory tower"; it was conceived, funded, and directed from its inception as a strategic instrument of statecraft.

Crucially, this domestic project could never have achieved global hegemony on its own. It required the active complicity of Western liberal academia, especially of the so-called peer-review boards. By uncritically rubber-stamping state-sanctioned propaganda, smothering the Palestinians' narrative, and granting it prestigious peer-reviewed imprints, Western academic presses functioned as an intellectual laundering pipeline--converting ideological mythmaking into accepted international fact. Let us be honest: rubber stamping the myths had its rewards in dollars and recognition, and those who refused to go along often paid the price dearly.

From David Ben-Gurion’s earliest directives instructing historians to "cook the facts" to modern scholars quietly smuggling debunked propaganda into peer-reviewed volumes, academia was systematically deployed to construct national myths--even as the primary records left by the founders themselves demolished those very lies and documented the real history of ethnic cleansing and dispossession.

I. The Architect’s Blueprint: Ben-Gurion and the Commissioning of History

The mobilization of academia was not an organic evolution; it was a top-down executive strategy. As historian Tom Segev documented in Haaretz and his biography A State at Any Cost, David Ben-Gurion recognized immediately in 1948 that controlling the historical record was as vital as controlling territorial borders. If the new state had not written its own history first, Palestinian testimonies and external observers would have filled the void.

Ben-Gurion established the IDF History Branch to construct an official, state-sanctioned account of the 1948 war. Historians were granted selective access to military archives, cabinet minutes, and captured documents, with explicit instructions to emphasize a "David vs. Goliath" narrative, frame Palestinian ethnic cleansing and dispossession as a "voluntary flight," and censor any evidence of calculated expulsions, massacres, or systematic looting.

As investigative journalist Shay Hazkani revealed in a landmark 2013 Haaretz exposure, Ben-Gurion went even further in the 1960s by setting up secret committees of scholars charged with creating a sanitized "evolution of the Israeli version" of the Nakba. Academic researchers were tasked with sifting through state archives to weaponize convenient passages while sealing inconvenient ledgers under military censorship. History was not being researched; it was being manufactured under executive supervision to erase the reality of dispossession.

II. The Inadvertent Debunking: Ben-Gurion’s Pre-Death Receipts

The supreme irony of this eight-decade academic effort is that Ben-Gurion himself inadvertently disproved the core myths of modern Hasbara in sworn testimonies, official publications, and parliamentary speeches before his death.

1. Demolishing "A Land Without a People"

In his 1966 volume The Jews in Their Land (published by Doubleday), Ben-Gurion served as chief editor. On page 292, the book explicitly records that in 1914, there were only 85,000 Jews in Palestine--representing just 12% of the total population--and that 73,000 lived in urban centers, many dependent on foreign charity (Halukka). The founder of the state explicitly put on record that 88% of the population in 1914 was non-Jewish (the actual record was much higher), demolishing the popular slogan that Palestine was an empty wasteland awaiting the Jews to bloom its desert.

2. Refuting the "Arab Immigrant" Hoax

Decades later, propagandists popularized the claim--most notoriously in Joan Peters’ 1984 book From Time Immemorial--that Palestinians were not indigenous, but rather recent Arab immigrants drawn to Palestine in the 1920s and 30s by Zionist economic development.

Yet, on July 7, 1947--less than a year before the Nakba--Ben-Gurion testified under oath before the UN Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP). When questioned by Czechoslovak diplomat Karel Lisický regarding population trends, Ben-Gurion stated the exact opposite of the modern myth:

"Palestine as a country, is not in itself a place of immigration, but one of emigration. People left the country. Many Arabs – especially Christian Arabs who had a little higher standard of living – left the country to go to South America and other countries."

In official UN transcripts, Ben-Gurion explicitly conceded that Palestine was a land suffering from Arab emigration, not a magnet drawing waves of foreign Arab migrants.

Why Did Prominent Jewish Intellectuals Praise This Hoax of a Book?

What was really sad, in fact very sad, was that prominent American Jewish intellectuals (such as Saul Bellow, Elie Wiesel, Lucy Dawidowicz, Arthur J. Goldberg, Theodore H. White, Paul Cowan, and Philip M. Hauser) praised this book, and once it was exposed as a hoax, they refused to take it back. On the contrary, several doubled down on the lies. But why? The answer is simple: this hoax of a book, and its big lies about Palestine and its people, had a "positive utility" for the "Jewish state." In the case of Eli Wiesel, he gained prominence after he published "The Jews of Silence" in 1966, and when the NY Times asked to explain his praises for this hoax of a book, his reply was complete silence, and that spoke volumes. 3. Admitting the Mechanics of Ethnic Cleansing and Dispossession: "Without Deir Yassin..."

For decades, official historiography presented the April 9th, 1948 Deir Yassin massacre as an isolated, rogue crime committed solely by "extremist dissidents" (the Irgun and Lehi) which the mainstream leadership abhorred.

Yet, as exposed in Haaretz, Ben-Gurion himself laid bare the necessity of terror-induced ethnic cleansing and dispossession during an April 1949 speech to the Knesset. Addressing critics who demanded territorial expansion across the entire land without accepting an Arab majority, Ben-Gurion stated bluntly:

"A Jewish state without Deir Yassin throughout the country can only be in a dictatorship of the minority."

In his own parliamentary words, the founding prime minister acknowledged that massacres like Deir Yassin were not rogue accidents, but the indispensable structural tool required to engineer a Jewish demographic majority. While his official history branch worked to scrub state responsibility for the Nakba, Ben-Gurion privately conceded to lawmakers that ethnic cleansing, systematic dispossession, and terror tactics were the foundational price of statehood.

In the late 1980s, under the statutory 30-year rule, the Israeli state--confident in its narrative dominance--began declassifying significant tranches of 1948 state and military archives. What followed was a profound shock to the establishment.

A generation of "New Historians," most prominently Benny Morris, accessed these primary records and published groundbreaking works such as The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947–1949. Utilizing the military's own internal reports (such as the June 1948 IDF Intelligence Service document analyzing the causes of Arab flight), Morris demolished the primary state myth: Palestinians had not fled voluntarily on the orders of Arab leaders, but were driven out overwhelmingly by Israeli military operations, psychological warfare, direct expulsions, and massacres. Morris repeatedly confirmed in interviews and recorded lectures that after scouring the state and military archives, he found zero evidence of any Arab broadcast or leadership directive ordering Palestinians to leave their homes and land. Crucially, Morris was the ultimate hostile witness. He was not a Palestinian sympathizer; in fact, his personal politics were deeply hawkish. In his notorious 2004 Haaretz interview with Ari Shavit ("Survival of the Fittest"), Morris expressed views far more explicitly hardline than Ben-Gurion or Netanyahu, openly justifying the 1948 ethnic cleansing and lamenting that Ben-Gurion had made a strategic mistake by failing to "finish the job" and expel every single Arab.

The fact that a scholar who politically defended ethnic cleansing and held deeply hostile views toward Palestinians was still forced by the military's own internal ledgers to confirm the Nakba and the dispossession of the indigenous population makes his archival findings unassailable.

Alarmed by how these primary records corroborated Palestinian oral histories and destroyed decades of state messaging, the security apparatus reacted. As revealed in a major 2019 Haaretz investigation by Hagar Shezaf ("Burying the Nakba"), the Defense Ministry’s secretive security department--known as Malmab--launched an ongoing covert campaign to scour public and private archives across Israel.

Is Exposing The True Antisemitism?

Malmab teams illegally removed, vault-sealed, and re-classified thousands of historical documents that had already been published by researchers--including evidence of village demolitions, military massacres (such as Safsaf and Tantura), and forced Bedouin expulsions and dispossession. Former Malmab head Yehiel Horev openly admitted to Haaretz that the objective of hiding already-published documents was to undermine the credibility of critical scholarship and prevent the public from accessing primary proof.

IV. Institutional Pillars: Maya Wind’s Towers of Ivory and Steel

In her 2024 landmark study, Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom, scholar Maya Wind demonstrates that this alignment between statecraft and scholarship remains structurally embedded in higher education.

Wind’s archival research exposes how Israeli universities were designed as direct pillars of state expansion and indigenous dispossession:

  Territorial Anchors: Institutions like Hebrew University on Mount Scopus and Ben-Gurion University in the Naqab were positioned strategically to assert territorial dominance and facilitate land confiscation and Palestinian dispossession.

• Archaeology as Dispossession: University archaeology departments provided scientific cover for declaring Palestinian villages "national historical sites," justifying the ethnic cleansing and expulsion of indigenous residents.

• Legal Shielding: University law faculties regularly authored legal frameworks and operational doctrines used by the military to insulate the state from international law and charges of war crimes or illegal land seizure.

Far from being neutral arbiters of truth, universities functioned as administrative, legal, and ideological arms of the state apparatus engaged in ongoing dispossession.

V. The Anatomy of Academic Contradictions: Falk, Porat, and Bauer

When state-sanctioned myths become deeply ingrained, even critical, liberal, or celebrated academic figures fall into glaring textual contradictions when trying to maintain institutional boundaries.

Case 1: Raphael Falk (Zionism and the Biology of the Jews, 2017)

Raphael Falk, a celebrated professor of genetics at Hebrew University, wrote his 2017 book to dismantle the biological definition of Jewishness. He famously accused early Zionist scientists of "shooting the arrow first, and then drawing the target around it" by starting with political conclusions and bending science to fit them.

Yet on pages 14–15 of his own introduction (which you can read for free online), Falk suffered a complete methodological collapse due to an ideological reflex. Driven by his commitment to the so-called "Liberal Zionism", Falk sought to establish a post-racial, pluralistic state by erasing everyone's indigeneity--reducing both Jews and Palestinians to non-indigenous status:

1. The Citation: Falk acknowledges David Ben-Gurion’s 1917 writing that Palestinian farmers (fellahin) were the direct biological descendants of ancient Hebrew populations who remained on the land.

2. Shukri al-Jamal's Palace in the Talibiya neighborhood in Jerusalem, two days after its completion and just before Zionist Jews looted it from him and his family

   The Unsourced Contradiction: Immediately in the next paragraph, Falk abandons his own scientific rigor and writes without a single footnote or citation: "Although at the beginning of the twentieth century a considerable proportion of the Palestinian Arabs were evidently immigrants from adjacent countries..."

Falk cited the primary evidence of Palestinian indigeneity, felt the political danger that this fact posed to his ideological model, and immediately smothered it with an unsourced propaganda talking point to deny Palestinian claims of dispossession. Case 2: Dina Porat (The Blue and the Yellow Stars of David, 1990)

Dina Porat--former Head of the Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies at Tel Aviv University and long-time Chief Historian of Yad Vashem--published her celebrated history of the Holocaust leadership with Harvard University Press.

On page 13, Porat inserted a casual parenthetical remark regarding British Mandate policy:

"(In contrast, there were no restrictions on the number of Arabs allowed to immigrate to Palestine.)"

This unsourced parenthetical statement directly recycled the debunked Joan Peters myth, aiming to portray Palestinians as recent arrivals rather than an ethnically cleansed indigenous population. It stands in total contradiction to official British Mandate primary ledgers. According to A Survey of Palestine (1946)--prepared by the Mandatory government for the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry--a total of precisely 33,305 Arab immigrants (mostly due to marriage and family reunifications) entered Palestine between 1920 and 1945 (p. 185). Over 25 years, this was a statistical drop in the bucket, especially when compared to Jewish immigration and Palestinian emigration, as Ben-Gurion stated earlier.

Porat, writing years after the "immigrant" myth had been thoroughly exposed as a statistical fraud by mainstream historians, slipped the assertion into a Harvard University Press book without a single archival reference.

Case 3: Yehuda Bauer (Jews For Sale?, 1994) – The Colonial Blind Spot & Catastrophic Determinism

Yehuda Bauer- the most Senior Historian at Yad Vashem and Dean of Holocaust Studies in Israel--provides one of the most vivid examples of structural cognitive dissonance in Israeli scholarship.

In his best-selling 1994 book Jews For Sale?, Bauer rightly condemned the colonial arrogance of Nazi planners in the early 1940s who considered shipping European Jews to Madagascar. Protesting the total disregard for the native inhabitants of the African island, Bauer wrote:

"...The Germans thought, Madagascar would become a German protectorate... Nobody ever mentioned the indigenous population, of course." (p. 58)

Bauer possessed the moral clarity to immediately identify and criticize the crime of imperial planners treating an inhabited island as an empty canvas while completely ignoring its indigenous inhabitants. Yet, when applied to Palestine--the crucial land-bridge of the Levant--this same moral framework was completely suspended. The foundational Zionist slogan that framed Palestine as an empty wilderness awaiting population was granted a moral exemption that Bauer denied to German plans in Madagascar, completely obscuring the indigenous population that was dispossessed and ethnically cleansed.

Furthermore, years before the October 7th Raid, Bauer explicitly predicted that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would ultimately end in genocide if either party accumulated enough absolute power to impose it on the other. On top of that, the senior Holocaust historian framed the Palestinians' right of return (which is enshrined in UNGA 194) as implying genocide for the Jews! This fatalistic prediction exposes the fatal doctrine of Catastrophic Zionism: a zero-sum, deeply ingrained worldview (shared by figures like Benzion Netanyahu) asserting that co-existence is impossible and that absolute physical dominance and dispossession are the only alternatives to total destruction.

VI. Gramsci's Cultural Hegemony in Practice: How The Western Peer Review Functions as Institutional Gatekeeping

The successful dissemination of these manufactured narratives exposes a broader, systemic failure in global academia. Selling eight decades of historical myths--and hiding the reality of ethnic cleansing and dispossession--was not a feat Israeli institutions could have accomplished in isolation. It required the active, institutional partnership of Western liberal academia.

Peer review is routinely presented to the public as an unassailable filter for truth, empirical rigor, and objective verification. Yet, in practice, Western peer-review boards and university presses routinely functioned as narrative-laundering operations for state-sanctioned historiography:

• Rubber-Stamping Unsourced Myths: When major presses like Harvard University Press or Springer published works by figures like Dina Porat or Raphael Falk, peer-review committees failed to perform basic empirical checks. Unsourced, debunked assertions--such as Porat's parenthetical claim of "unrestricted Arab immigration"--were rubber-stamped without requiring a single primary source citation or archival reference to British Mandate ledgers like A Survey of Palestine.

  Institutional Credentialism as a Shield: By conferring the prestige of Ivy League imprints and peer-reviewed journals onto state narratives, Western academia provided political actors with a rhetorical weapon. Any critical analysis utilizing raw primary records documenting ethnic cleansing and dispossession could be dismissed simply because it lacked the blessing of "peer-reviewed" consensus.

• Selective Verification: While submissions challenging state narratives or documenting Palestinian dispossession were subjected to hyper-vigilant scrutiny and ideological gatekeeping, works echoing official statecraft enjoyed a frictionless path to publication.

Western liberal academia did not merely observe this process; it actively validated and distributed the propaganda. In other words, in practice, they have implemented Gramsci's Cultural Hegemony on a massive scale. By elevating ideological assertions to the status of "peer-reviewed scholarship," Western academic gatekeepers ensured that state myths were taught in university classrooms, cited in policy papers, and accepted as mainstream consensus across the Western world. As we wrote at the beginning of this article: rubber stamping the myths had its rewards in dollars and recognition, and those who refused to go along often paid the price dearly. VII. Conclusion

The historical record demonstrates that for eight decades, Israeli academia served as an essential cog in the machinery of statecraft, amplified and legitimized by a compliant Western academic establishment. From Ben-Gurion's explicit instructions to "cook" the historical narrative, to modern university departments providing legal and ideological cover for ethnic cleansing and dispossession, research was repeatedly subordinated to political imperatives. When brief declassifications in the 1980s allowed Zionist scholars like Benny Morris to expose the truth of the Nakba, the defense establishment responded not with open debate, but with secretive censorship units like Malmab to lock the archives away once more.

Primary archives, British Mandate surveys, and Ben-Gurion’s own sworn testimonies systematically refute the foundational slogans of this academic enterprise. Yet, through peer-reviewed prestige and Western institutional gatekeeping, these manufactured narratives were successfully exported to the Western world as objective truth while the indigenous population remained dispossessed.

Which brings us to a final, inescapable question:

If Israeli academia was used to sell us manufactured lies about Palestine and its people for the past eight decades--and Western academia blindly rubber-stamped them--what else did they sell us that we still blindly believe?

It was precisely this question that led to a comprehensive re-examination of the official state narrative surrounding the Haavara Agreement and the Zionist movement's response to the Holocaust.
